About the Role
Headhunt International is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated, and clinically skilled Perfusion Scientist (Staff Grade) to join our dynamic Cardiothoracic Services team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery of an advanced and highly specialised perfusion service, ensuring exceptional care for every patient undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass or extracorporeal support.

Essential Criteria
Candidates must, on the latest date of application, have:
a)
(i) Accreditation by the College of Clinical Perfusion of Great Britain and Ireland,
OR
(ii) An equivalent qualification.
AND
(iii) Registration with the College of Clinical Perfusionists of Great Britain and Ireland as a practising Clinical Perfusionist.
b)
Demonstrated clinical and administrative capacity to fulfil the responsibilities of the role.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
The Perfusion Scientist (Staff Grade) will:
Play a key role in delivering a highly specialist perfusion service, ensuring safe, effective, and well-coordinated patient care.
Perform a wide range of specialised perfusion techniques for both routine and emergency cardiopulmonary bypass procedures.
Assess patient medical history, pathology, and diagnosis to inform clinical decision-making during perfusion.
Advise clinicians on equipment suitability and influence clinical decision pathways.
Set up, prime, and operate cardiopulmonary bypass systems in line with clinical policy and the latest scientific evidence.
Undertake, analyse, and interpret arterial/venous blood gases and coagulation profiles.
Administer a range of fluids and drugs including vasoactive medications, anticoagulants, haemostatic agents, cardioplegia solutions, and other pharmacological agents as required.
Continuously monitor complex and dynamic clinical parameters and act autonomously to maintain patient stability.
Manipulate cardiovascular parameters on a second-to-second basis during bypass.
Determine and perform haemofiltration and blood transfusion as clinically indicated.
Set up and manage advanced perfusion techniques including:
Antegrade/retrograde cerebral perfusion
Deep hypothermic circulatory arrest
Mechanical circulatory support devices
ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation)
ECCO₂R (Extracorporeal Carbon Dioxide Removal)
Professional Responsibilities
