Any doctor wishing to practise medicine in the Republic of Ireland must register with the Medical Council. It is an offence to practise within the State while unregistered, with the exception of administering first aid or visiting European Economic Area (EEA) registered doctors attending in an emergency.

Every doctor is responsible for ensuring that their registration is current and appropriate for their individual circumstances.

To complete your IMC Registration please follow all steps below:

Step 1:
Create an account with the Irish Medical Council (IMC) by visiting their website:

Click on “Register” to create an account.

Step 2:
Log in to your account and complete the application form for registration as a doctor in Ireland under
the EU Mutual Recognition route. Carefully read the instructions and provide accurate information.

Step 3:
Gather the required documentation and ensure all documents are notarized or attested as
necessary:
– Notarized/attested copy of your passport.
– Notarized/attested copy of your Basic Medical Qualification
– English translation of your Basic Medical Qualification
– Official English translation of the certificate to accompany qualification, if not in English
– Application fee: General Registration €410, Specialist Registration €640

Step 4:
Request the relevant competent authorities to provide the IMC with your Certificate of Current
Professional Status. You must provide details of your qualifications and verify that you have not been
subject to disciplinary proceedings in any country where you previously practiced.

Step 5:
EU, EEA, or Swiss doctors who have completed their specialist training in a Member State can apply
for recognition of their qualifications through the EU Mutual Recognition route. Submit the
necessary documentation to support your application for recognition of your specialist qualifications.

Step 6:
After submitting your application, you will receive a reference number via email. The Medical Council
will assess and verify your documentation with other bodies and institutions before making a
decision on your registration.

Upon approval, you will need to pay a registration fee of €560 (for both General and Specialist
registration). An annual retention fee of €560 to €605 will apply.
